It's dark out there ... and I'm afraid.

Ramblings of ... too much time in my head ...

Things I don't do #1: Watch the local news. My quote to the babysitter as I walked out the door the other day: "Good luck! They're all jacked up." Cool quote I saw on a t-shirt this week: "Why, yes, I do spontaneously break out in ninja moves." Healthy life = healthy mix of competition and cooperation. Help yourself AND help others (and not just thos LIKE you). Today's life lesson: TEAM success comes with TEAM desire, sacrifice, and hard work. Character and class DO matter. Wondering what 'commitment' means to people anymore. Just bring it ... through God - with loyalty and respect. Hope doesn't disappoint us because His love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. (Romans 5:5) Look the truth straight on. (Lombardi) MVP David Eckstein to donate kidney because that's what Eckstein's do ... amazing. I have made you a light to the nations, that you may be an instrument of salvation to the ends of the earth. (Acts 13:47) Love your teammates. Choose a great attitude. Work hard, play hard. Take care of your responsibilities. (Remember Why You Play) Listen to each other - what a beautiful message for this oppositional society and a war-torn world. One more day-in-the-life! THANK YOU, GOD!

The Four Oxen and the Lion

A lion used to prowl about a field in which four oxen used to dwell. Many a time the lion tried to attack the oxen; but whenever the lion came near the oxen turned their tails to one another, so that whichever way the lion approached the oxen, he was met by the horns of one of them.  At last, however, the oxen fell a-quarrelling among themselves, and each went off to pasture alone in a separate corner of the field. Then the lion attacked them one by one and soon made an end of all four.

Is winning really ALL that matters? Really? Face it. Winning means different things to different people.

Listen. Learn. Laugh. Love ... Then thank God for being able to do so. Life - make a difference in your own AND someone else's!

Not a hypocrite, just human

I made a mistake. I apologize.

I continue to listen. To learn. To laugh when I can. And to love, always!

... and to improve.

I have a difficulty with adults who feel the need to call names.

Look, some of it is just plain funny - I agree. But when it comes down to it, just because you're passionate about your opinion and someone else can't seem to grasp your views, doesn't mean you should call them names. We're not a bunch of third-graders, here. We don't need to tease and ridicule when it comes to supporting our own statements or trying to oppose another's. Facts, viewpoints and strategies for helping other people seem to be the most efficient and beneficial way to get around things. Both sides of any argument you see these days seem to be ready to resort to name-calling and mud-slinging. And Heaven help me, I'm sure I am to blame for supporting some of the ridiculous behavior in the name of pushing my own agenda. But I try not to. Really, I do. And I would hope that we could all respect each other enough to listen to each other and try to help - not JUST try to win.

A Big Difference From A Child's Unknowing Kindness

... a mother's story ...

The other day, I was talking to another mom for some time.  We shared the normal stories of potty training, school, etc. and then she mentioned one of the things she had been struggling with- her daughter,Emily's delayed speech. Emily was almost 4 years old and still speaking in only two-word sentences.

I was able to relate since my son had also been a late talker and like many new parents, anything out of the norm will cause some level of concern. I understood her concern because Emily, unable to always communicate with words, would resort to hitting others when frustrated - a very common response mechanism with speech delay.

That night after talking the issue through with her for a while, I told her that I would put her in touch with my friend who was a speech therapist; and, I let her know that, if needed, I wanted to at least lend her a sympathetic ear - since we had gone through a similar thing.

A few days later, Emily's mom emailed me with a sweet little story. She said  that when Emily and my son were sharing the same snack table, my son had asked for Emily's uneaten Cheerios. Emily willingly shared her Cheerios and my son had exclaimed that Emily was a "very nice girl". Emily's mom wrote that Emily was beaming that entire day. Her mom said that Emily never felt that great before and no one had ever said that to her. I thought that the entire scenario was so sweet. Though small in many ways, that one exclamation was huge for Emily.

I find it very amazing how children unknowingly express kindness.

"The Cow"

CALCUTTA's Telegraph has got hold of an answer paper of a candidate at the
recent UPSC examinations. The candidate has written an essay on the Indian
cow:

"The cow is a successful animal. Also he is quadrupud, and because he is
female, he give milk, but will do so when he is got child. He is same like
God,sacred to Hindus and useful to man.But he has got four legs together.
Two are forward and two are afterwards.

"His whole body can be utilised for use. More so the milk. What can it do?
Various ghee, butter, cream, curd, why and the condensed milk and so forth.
Also he is useful to cobbler, watermans and mankind generally.

"His motion is slow only because he is of asitudinious species.  Also his
other motion is much useful to trees, plants as well as making flat cakes in
hand and drying in the sun. Cow is the only animal that extricates his feeding
after eating.  Then afterwards she chew with his teeth whom are situated in
the inside of the mouth.  He is incessantly in the meadows in the grass.

"His only attacking and defending organ is the horn, specially so when he is
got child.  This is done by knowing his head whereby he causes the weapons
to be paralleled to the ground of the earth and instantly proceed with great
velocity forwards.

"He has got tails also, but not like similar animals.  It has hairs on the
other end of the other side.  This is done to frighten away the flies which
alight on his cohoa body whereupon he gives hit with it.

The palms of his feet are soft unto the touch.  So the grasses head is not
crushed.  At night time have poses by looking down on the ground and he shouts
his eyes like his relatives, the horse does not do so.

"This is the cow."

P.S.: We are informed that the candidate passed the exam.

A LITTLE STORY

A businessman was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellowfin tuna. The businessman complimented the fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them. The fisherman replied only a little while.
.

The businessman then asked why he didn't stay out longer and catch more fish? The fisherman said he had enough to support his family's immediate needs. The businessman then asked, but what do you do with the rest of your time? The fisherman said, "I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take a siesta with my wife, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos; I have a full and busy life."
.
The businessman scoffed, "I am a Harvard MBA and I could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds buy a bigger boat. With the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats; eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman, you would sell directly to the processor and eventually open your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then LA and eventually New York City where you would run your expanding enterprise."
.
The fisherman asked, "But how long will this all take?" To which the businessman replied, "15-20 years." "But what then?" asked the fisherman The businessman laughed and said, "That's the best part! When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich. You would make millions." "Millions? Then what?" The businessman said, "Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take a siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos."
.

The fisherman, still smiling, looked up and said, "Isn't that what I'm doing right now?"

definition of success in a simple life well lived

"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and affection of children; to learn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a little bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded."

There is Strength in Unity: A Story of Birds, Leadership, and Teamwork

One day, a flock of birds was flying together across the countryside.  Several of the birds in the flock noticed grains of rice that had been scattered under a large banyan tree below.

"Let's land now, so that we can fill our bellies for the rest of our journey," said one of the birds to their leader.

Another added, "Yes, we've been flying for a great distance and have not had food for quite some time.  We won't have the energy to continue unless we eat soon!"

The leader, on the advice of his flock, agreed that they would land and feast on the rice.

As the last grains of rice were being eaten, a large net fell on top of the flock, trapping them.

In a panic, members of the flock tried to flee unsuccessfully.

"Quick!  A hunter with a large club is coming!   He will surely kill us all!" exclaimed one of the birds.

Again, the birds tried to fly off in different directions, unsuccessfully.

The leader, calmly observing all of this, spoke loudly and quickly got the attention of the flock.

"We must all work together to escape.  This will be the only way we will succeed.  All of us must beat our wings simultaneously, in synchrony, and we must all fly in the same direction--follow my lead," he said.

In silence, each bird in the flock flapped its wings in synchrony.  Remarkably, the entire flock, still covered by the net, rose into the sky, out of reach of the hunter.

The flock of birds cheered at their success together.

The leader of the birds, then said, "Congratulations.  Now we must turn our attention to the task of freeing ourselves from this net.  Follow my lead, continuing in synchrony.  We will seek the help of a community of mice over those hills in the distance."

"How will you know that they will help us?" asked one of the followers.

The leader replied, "I have befriended the leader of these mice.  We have helped one another many times over the years.  I have no doubt that we can depend on his assistance."

They flew over the nearby hills, and landed in the village of mice.  The leader of the mice approached the flock and noticed his friend, the leader of the birds.  Understanding what happened, the leader of the mice called several of his villagers to help by gnawing through the net.

An opening was finally created, and the leader of the mice said to the bird leader, "Alas, my friend, you are safe.  Please exit through this opening we have created."

The bird leader replied, "I shall let my flock exit first, and I will exit only after them."

All of the birds cleared the net, and the leader of the birds thanked his mouse friend.

Together, the flock returned to their own village...in synchrony.

Diaper Desperado

In Jackson Center, Pa., a woman reported that someone used a ladder to climb into the second story of her home and that all that was missing was $10 worth of diapers - despite the presence, in the same room, of preciouse jewelry and antiques.
